Kuiper, Taco (1824-1906)

Taco Kuiper was a Dutch Mennonite minister. Like his grandfather Taco Kuiper he chose the ministry as his life's vocation after graduating from the Mennonite Seminary and the Athenaeum of Amsterdam in 1849. He served the congregations of Zuid-Zijpe until 1850, Warga, Zaandam-Westzijde 1852-1859, and Zwolle 1859-1862. He then was called to the Amsterdam Mennonite Church, which he served until his retirement in 1890. Kuiper was an outstanding preacher, the large Singelkerk always being filled when he preached. In his theological views he adhered to a biblical and ethical orthodoxy in a time when modernism was the trend among the Dutch Mennonites. For some time he served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (Dutch Mennonite General Conference) and secretary of the Doopsgezinde Zendingsvereniging (mission society). He published some sermons, Tiental Leerredenen (Zwolle, 1893) and translated Uhlhorn's Der Kampf des Christentums mit dem Heidentum, which appeared under the title Strijd en overwinning . . . of which the third edition appeared in 1879. Some articles by Kuiper are found in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen (1877, 1880, 1885, 1886, 1887, 1889, 1890, 1891, 1892, 1893). Taco Kuiper was a son of Esgo Taco Kuiper, a notary at Bolsward, and Neeltje Feenstra, daughter of Pastor P. W. Feenstra of Sneek. He was married to Elizabeth Hovens Greve, a daughter of Pastor K. H. Hovens Greve of Steenwijk. Kuiper was born 17 November 1824 at Bolsward, Friesland, and he died on 15 October 1906 at Haarlem.
