Martin (Maerten) van de Walle, an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 15 October 1558 at Bruges, Belgium, with three other men. Martin was a silk-weaver, a native of Ghent, and 33 years of age. He had been (re)baptized in 1551 at Antwerp by Gillis van Aken; later he lived at Ghent, and from 1557 at Bruges. Meetings of the congregation were sometimes held in his home, attended by members from the city and from the country. Martin apparently was a widower; he left two children. The martyr Jan van de Walle was his brother.
