Mattheus Wens (d. 1573)

Mattheus Wens was a Mennonite of Antwerp, Belgium, a mason by trade and a deacon of the congregation. His wife Maeyken Wens was apprehended and put to death at Antwerp on 6 October 1573. While she was in prison Mattheus wrote her a letter, and Maeyken wrote her reply on the back of the same sheet and returned the letter. This letter, a unique martyrs' document and the only extant autographic letter of a martyr, is now in the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde

Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam)|Amsterdam Mennonite Archives]]. Maeyken's letter is found in van Braght's <em>Martyrs Mirror</em>; that of her husband was published by S. Cramer in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen (1904): 119 f.
