Matthijssen, Johannes Petrus (1924-1978)

Johannes Petrus Matthijssen studied at the missionary high school in Oegstgeest (The Netherlands) and at Goshen Biblical Seminary (United States). He married Mary Berkman. From 1951 to 1958 they worked under the Dutch Mennonite mission board (later known as the Doopsgezinde Zendingsraad) in Java (Indonesia). Following their return in 1958 he served as executive secretary of the mission board, and from 1960 he was pastor of the Mennonite congregations in Meppel and Hoogeveen. From 1964 until the time of his death he served as pastor of the Mennonite congregation in Amsterdam. He assumed primary responsibility for local arrangements for the Mennonite World Conference held in Amsterdam in 1967.
