Mechelen (Malines), a town in Belgium (population in 1950, 61,380; in 2005, 77,480; coordinates: 51° 1′ 40″ N, 4° 28′ 30″ E), which in 1507-1530 was the seat of the regent Margaret of Austria. Though Anabaptist activity was not very strong here, there must have been some Anabaptists at Mechelen, for in September 1539 a number of them were put to death here (number and names unknown). In 1554-1556 Elder Leenaert Bouwens baptized five persons at Mechelen.
