Nachrichten, Unschuldige (Periodical)
Unschuldige Nachrichten was the first German theological journal. It was founded at Leipzig, Germany, in 1701 by Valentin Ernst Löscher. He was succeeded as editor by Michael Heinrich Reinhard, Löscher again, Johann Erhard Kapp, and Johann Rudolf Kiesling. Its name was changed a number of times; in 1701 it was called Altes und Neues aus dem Schatz theologischer Wissenschaften; 1702-1719 Unschuldige Nachrichten von alten und neuen theologischen Sachen; 1720-1750 Fortgesetzte Sammlung von alten und neuen theologischen Sachen; 1751-1761 Neue Beiträge von alten und neuen theologischen Sachen. Publication stopped in 1761.
It was supplemented during the first 50 years by the Theologische Annales (1715-1754), in five volumes, each for a period of ten years (the first volume of which went through a second edition); and during the period 1735-1742 it was supplemented by Frühaufgelesene Früchte der theologischen Sammlung von Alten und Neuen. Excerpts from the first 40 volumes were published by Johann Christian Ammon (Kernhafter Auszug ... 1745-1752) and Benedikt Born or rather Benjamin Bieler (Neueröffnete Schatzkammer... 1746-1747). "Every month or at shorter intervals a periodical went out into the world, filled with discussions on old and new books, quotations from unprinted sources, articles on questions of scholarship, refutations, church news, and the like. . . . There is in existence no clearer mirror of the thought process of Lutheran orthodoxy in the first half of the 18th century than this paper, which is also an excellent collection of source material for church history" (Blanckmeister, 20). A complete index in five volumes for the years 1701-1750 and individual indexes for the following years revealed a frequent mention of the Anabaptists, the Mennonites, and the writings by and about them.
