Charles Lloyd Pannabecker was a medical missionary and a superintendent of the mission hospital in Puyang [formerly Kai Chow], Hebei [Hopei] Province, China, 1926-1941. (In 1987 Puyang is located in Henan [Honan] Province.) He and his wife, Lelia E. Roth (1898-1956), served under the Board of Foreign Missions (General Conference Mennonite). He guided the hospital during years in which military encounters and natural disasters occurred frequently in that area. The hospital grew from 35 to 80 beds during that time and maintained outstation clinic work and a school of nursing. In 1987 it was the only recognized hospital within a six-county area (pop. 2,200,000).

Pannabecker was born 15 April 1896 in Petoskey, MI, the son of Jacob Nelson and Luna May (Plowman) Pannabecker. His father was a minister in the Mennonite Brethren in Christ church [Missionary Church]. Pannabecker was baptized and joined that church in his youth. He studied at Bluffton College (AB, 1917), the University of Michigan (MD, 1925), and completed residency training in ophthalmology at the University of Michigan (1944). He and his twin brother Floyd served together in China; younger brothers were Karl and Ray (minister and educator in the [[[United Missionary Church|United] Missionary Church]]).

After returning from China, C. L. Pannabecker practiced ophthalmology in Peoria, IL (1944-1974), where he was active in the Presbyterian Church. Children of Lloyd and Lelia were Betty Jean, Anita (Bohn), Donald L., and Daniel N. In 1961 he married Clara Neumann. He died 18 January 1987.
