Plett, Maria Brandt (1843-1927)
Maria Brandt Plett, Mennonite pioneer, was born on 22 September 1843 in the village of Tiegenhagen, Molotschna Colony, South Russia. She was the second and only daughter of four children born to Klaas S. "Nikolai" Reimer (1815-1857) and Maria F. Reimer (1814-1851). In 1861 Maria was baptized into the membership of the Kleine Gemeinde. She married Isaac L. Plett (1844-1871) in 1863. Together they had four children of which only Isaac B. Plett (1867-1933) survived to adulthood.
After just 10 years of marriage Maria’s husband Isaac died during an outbreak of typhus in 1871. She continued managing the farm on her own until 1873. With plans underway at this time for migration to Canada, Maria began liquidating her assets so that by the time she immigrated to Canada in 1874 Maria was wealthy enough to lend the Kleine Gemeinde treasury $600.00. Maria was the only woman on record wealthy enough to contribute to the assistance of needy families in the Kleine Gemeinde in this manner. Maria and her son settled in Steinbach, Manitoba where she lived until her death on 27 June 1927.
