Schweizerisches Mennonitisches Friedenskomitee/ Comité Mennonite suisse pour la paix (SMFK/ CMSP; Swiss Mennonite Peace Committee)

While the question of military service for the Swiss Mennonites was dormant between 1945 and 1965, it became an issue after this period of time because of increasing contacts with North American Mennonites and general sociocultural developments in Europe. A mandate from the Conference Mennonite Suisse/Konferenz der Mennoniten in der Schweiz (Swiss Mennonite Conference) led in 1970 to the founding of a "Study Commission on Military Issues" (Studienkommission für Militärfragen). This commission became an official organ of the conference in 1974 with the task of pursuing and deepening awareness of the question of military service and nonresistance (Wehrlosigkeit) through regular updating of information and recommendations for the congregations.

According to the new statutes of the conference (1983), this committee, which in the process of extending its range of activities adopted the new name of Swiss Mennonite Peace Committee (Schweizerisches Mennonitisches Friedenskomitee/ Comité Mennonite Suisse pour la Paix) has the mandate to further the peace witness within and beyond the Mennonite congregations.

Early chairpersons of the SMFK were Paul Hofer (1970-1883), Hanspeter Jecker (1983-1987), and Paul Gerber. SMFK was a member of both Church and Peace and the European Mennonite Peace Committee (Europäisches Mennonitisches Friedenskomitee).
