Van der Sluys (Versluys, van Sluys), a Dutch Mennonite family, whose ancestors lived in Belgium. Guilliame Versluys (died ca. 1628) was a burgomaster of Waerschoot, Flanders; his widow with three sons and one daughter, all Mennonites, moved to Cadzand in Zealand-Flanders, Netherlands in 1629. Among them was Guiliame van der Sluys, called de Oude, who later lived at Aardenburg as a wool and cloth merchant, and died there about 1675, whose son Maerten married Maria van Eeghen. Jan Versluys, a farmer at Zomergem, Belgium, moved to de Biezen near Aardenburg with his family, all Mennonites, about 1620. Another Guilliame van der Sluys, called de Jonge, lived about 1667 at Zierikzee, Dutch province of Zeeland, where he owned a thriving textile business. Martin van der Sluys, the husband of the martyr Grietgen van Sluys, probably belonged to the same family. Another member of this family was Guillaume van der Sluys, of Rotterdam, a member and deacon of the Flemish Mennonite congregation, who in 1661 with others signed the letter of Dutch Mennonite congregations to the city of Bern, to intervene with the Bernese government in behalf of the oppressed Mennonites, and who signed the Verbondt van Eenigheydt in 1664 for the congregation of Rotterdam. In 1663 he was present when Tieleman Jansz van Braght disputed with Pastor Aemilius at Oud-Beyerland. Most members of this family left the Mennonite Church to join the Reformed in the 18th century.
