Jansz Volkert, born ca. 1610 at Hoorn, died there 1681, a well-to-do cloth merchant on the Nieuwedijk at Amsterdam, was a syndic of the Cloth Guild. As such he was depicted in 1661 by Rembrandt in the famous painting "De Staalmeesters" (the Cloth Syndics) now found in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum (Jansz is the second person to the left, standing). He was also the owner of an art cabinet in which he collected paintings, books, and curiosities, and was a member and probably a deacon of the Old Frisian Mennonite church (Bloemstraat congregation) at Amsterdam. His last years he spent in the home of Jacob Fransz Sleutel, who was married to his sister Aaltje Jans.
