Wiersum family

Wiersum, an old Mennonite family in the Dutch province of Groningen, which is derived from the same ancestor as the Wiersema family. Until recent times the Wiersums were nearly all farmers, and often deacons of the Mennonite church. Eppe (Tonnisz) Wiersum (Uithuizen 1869-Rotterdam 1955) was city archivist of Rotterdam from 1904. He did not join the church, but was much interested in Mennonite history. In the Rotterdamsch Jaarboekje of 1910 he published a paper on Jan Bisschop. He rendered a real service to the Rotter­dam Mennonite congregation by arranging and describing its rich archives (printed catalogue). An address by Wiersum, "De Doopsgezinde Gemeente in het Rotterdam van omstreeks 1775," was published in Na Hondertvijftig Jaar (Rotterdam, 1925).
