Leland Church of God in Christ, Mennonite (Leland, Mississippi, USA)
The Leland Church of God in Christ, Mennonite congregation near Leland, Mississippi, USA was established in late 1967. The congregation started when families began to move to the area to work in land leveling in 1965.
Initially, families traveled to the Bethany Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, at Clarksdale. In 1967 they began with Sunday school in homes but later rented facilities like the Masonic Lodge and the Leland Garden Club. The congregation was organized after Minister Ben Giesbrecht moved to the area. In 1968 the growing congregation rented the former Glendale Baptist Church. Land was purchased four miles east of Leland in 1970, and a church building was erected and dedicated in July 1971. It was remodeled and had an addition in 1986.
The congregation organized the Leland Mennonite School in 1971. New school facilities were built by fall 1974. In 1994 additional land was purchased adjacent to the church, and a new school facility was erected by fall 1995.
In 1989 five families left to help begin the congregation at Dumas, Arkansas. In 2005 the congregation helped to launch the Pleasant Hills Mennonite Church near Mize, Mississippi. A minister and deacon moved to the new congregation.
In 2020 the congregation was part of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. The ministers were Vernon Yost and Sheldon Hughes.
