Marcus Arisz, a preacher in the Norden (Germany) Mennonite Church, born 16  September 1716 at Amsterdam, received into the church there by baptism 8 December 1737, and died 4  December 1784 at Norden. He was at first engaged in the carpenter's and cabinetmaker's trade, then, "enlightened by the Lord," he devoted himself to the study of theology under the well-known Mennonite preacher Johannes Deknatel in Amsterdam. On 27 October 1740 he was called to be the preacher of the Waterlander congregation in Norden, and on 9 July was ordained by Cornelis van Kampen, the pastor of the church at Emden. His faithful work through 44 years brought great blessing to his church. Reinhard Rahusen of Leer preached the funeral sermon. Arisz was deeply pious and of great faith, as is shown in his correspondence with Deknatel. His wife was a Moravian, for which reason he associated much with members of the Moravian congregation in Norden, causing some displeasure in his own church. Under his leadership, after many attempts, the union of the Waterlander congregation with the Ukowallist (so-called Groninger Old Flemish) congregation in Norden was achieved on 12 April 1780. For four years before his death he served the united church, with his fellow preacher Bavinck of Leer.
